What to expect
Expect continuous elevation changes, winding roads carved into mountainsides, and frequent switchbacks. As you climb higher, temperatures can drop significantly, and weather conditions can change within minutes. Many mountain routes are engineered for both engineering marvel and scenic impact.
Risks & challenges
Mountain driving carries more technical risk than most other route types. Steep descents can lead to brake overheating if not managed properly, and sharp curves require constant attention. Fog, snow, or ice may appear even during seasons that seem safe at lower elevations. In some regions, guardrails may be limited or absent.
How to prepare
Before driving mountain routes, ensure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition, especially brakes and tires. Use engine braking on long descents and avoid overheating brakes. Always check weather forecasts for higher elevations, not just nearby towns, as conditions can differ significantly.
