Travel Experience

The first thing we noticed was how difficult it was to judge distance. Rock formations that looked close turned out to be much farther away, hidden behind layers of valleys and forest.

At one roadside stop people weren't really looking at the road at all. Everyone was staring upward, trying to pick out individual stone pillars through patches of cloud and haze.

There was a stretch where the mountains kept appearing and disappearing as the weather changed. One minute the landscape looked open, and ten minutes later half of it was hidden again.

We stopped for food in a small town near the park and ended up spending more time watching the surrounding cliffs than actually eating. It felt like the scenery was impossible to ignore, even during a break.

By the end of the Zhangjiajie Scenic Roads, I remembered the vertical scale more than anything else. Most mountain drives spread outward across valleys, but here everything seemed to rise straight up from the ground in unexpected places.
