Travel Experience

We left Auckland kind of late and immediately ran into traffic, so the β€œloop” feeling didn’t really start until much later than expected. Nobody was in a rush though, we just kept moving.

At one stop near a geothermal area, the smell was the first thing that hit us more than anything else. We didn’t stay too long, partly because it felt a bit weird standing there, partly because there were other places to get to.

There were long stretches where the landscape kept shifting between green hills, volcanic-looking areas, and then suddenly coastline. We didn’t really comment on most of it after a while, just sort of absorbed it in the background.

We stopped for food in a small town that felt busier than expected for its size. Service was slow and we ended up sitting longer than planned just because it was easier than getting back into the car right away.

By the end of the North Island Loop, it didn’t feel like one continuous drive so much as a series of completely different environments loosely connected by road. Some parts stood out, but most of it was just the rhythm of driving, stopping, and starting again.
