Travel Experience
For a long stretch it felt like nothing was changing, then we'd come around a bend and suddenly there were huge red dunes off to one side. We kept saying we'd stop at the next pull-off, then missed a couple and had to keep driving.
I remember being surprised by how quiet it was whenever we got out of the car. No traffic, no people nearby, just wind now and then. We stood there for a minute without really saying much.
Around midday we started paying more attention to water and fuel than the scenery. There wasn't anything wrong, we just realized the distances were bigger than they looked on the map. That's probably what I remember most about how long the drive feels.
One stop was basically just us sitting in the shade of the vehicle eating snacks. Nothing special happened. After a while we got back on the road and continued the road trip through the Namib Desert.
Later in the day the light changed and the dunes looked completely different from what we'd seen earlier. We pulled over for a few photos, then spent more time brushing sand off our shoes than actually taking pictures.
